The Translation and Interpretation program is for students who speak two languages and who are interested in exciting and well-paying careers where their language skills are needed to help others communicate.

Students are introduced to a variety of interesting careers requiring knowledge of more than one language and culture. They graduate from the program with increased vocabulary and better reading, writing and speaking skills in both of their languages. Students who are successful in the program can also earn college credit.

Students learn the skills that professional interpreters use. They practice interpreting and learn about interpreter ethics (what to do and what not to do). They develop poise and confidence when interpreting. These skills also help students give excellent oral presentations in other classes.

Students also learn and practice the process used by professionals to produce written translations. They find that this improves their writing skills in both their languages.

As part of a Student Interpreter program, students have an opportunity to practice at school social events. They also visit courts and hospitals to observe and talk to professional interpreters in the workplace.

Second semester students gain practical experience by participating in internships. Students may also choose to prepare for the Washington State medical interpreter certification exam. Students who pass this exam can work as professional medical interpreters.

This program is the only one of its kind in the country and has the support of local and national translating and interpreting organizations. A dozen local professional translators and interpreters serve on the program's advisory board and have opportunities to interact with students in the classroom.
