The VITAL program is a high school completion program for students who have come to PSSC and found success and satisfaction in the vocational programs offered here. Some students find themselves seniors short of credits required for graduation, and occasionally have to leave PSSC to return to the sending school to complete these requirements.

The VITAL program was established to prevent this. Through a special agreement between PSSC and the Superintendents of the Highline, Federal Way, Tukwila, and Tahoma School Districts, qualifying students can remain at PSSC full time, take both their vocational program and their final academic requirements. The most successful VITAL students have fewer than 10 credits to complete, and to do so usually take three full semesters. Successful VITAL students are self-motivated and self-disciplined learners, as only 25% of the class work is done with a traditional course taught at a specific time. The remaining 75% is done independently. Unmotivated students, students with poor attendance, or uncooperative students do not find success in VITAL. Upon completion of the academic requirements, PSSC transfers the credits back to the sending high school, which issues the diploma. VITAL is not a G.E.D. program, nor is it an Alternative High School. It is a highly focused program option at PSSC.

VITAL stands for Vocational Instruction Through Applied Learning. Students do not "sign up" for VITAL -- but rather are referred to the program by their parents, home school assistant principal, and PSSC vocational program teacher. VITAL is not for everyone, but it is a fantastic alternative for certain vocationally-oriented high school seniors. For more information about VITAL, e-mail VITAL Staff.
